Upload a list

Add your contact file on the Audience step, see what the builder read, and fix a file it cannot use.

Your list goes in on the Audience step of the builder. The builder reads the file in your browser, finds the phone numbers, and tells you plainly if something in the file stops it.

Before you start

  • Your list is ready: one contact per row, column names in the first row, a phone column. See Prepare your list.

  • You can open the builder. It needs a confirmed email and credits on your balance. See Build a campaign.

Upload the file

  1. Select New campaign in the top bar.

  2. On Name, type the campaign's name and select Next.

  3. On Audience, the first part is Upload. Drag your file onto Drop your list here, or select Choose a file. On a phone, the button reads Choose your list.

  4. Wait while the builder reads the file. It names the file it is reading.

What you see

The step moves to Map. Over the table, the file's name, its number of columns and rows, and Choose another file. If the file came from a workbook with several sheets, the line also names the sheet it read.

Next, check what each column is used for. See Match your columns.

The files the builder reads

  • CSV, with commas, semicolons or tabs between the values. A French-language Excel export that uses semicolons works.

  • TSV and TXT exports.

  • Excel workbooks (.xlsx).

  • An "Excel" export from a CRM that is really a web page table or tab-separated text, even under an .xls name.

The builder reads a file by what is in it, not by its name. Accented names (é, è, ç) come through as written.

Title lines above the column names, such as a report name and an "Exported by" line, are skipped. The builder takes as the column names the first row near the top that holds no phone number, is filled across more than half as wide as the rows under it, and has only narrower lines above it.

When a file cannot be used

The builder shows one card that says what went wrong and what to do, with Download the template and Choose another file.

The card saysWhat to do
The file is over 20 MBExport fewer columns from your CRM, or split the list into two files and run two campaigns.
The file isn't a CSV or Excel file we can readExport it again from your CRM. CSV and Excel (.xlsx) both work.
The file has no contacts in itThe first row holds the column names, and each row under it holds one contact.
The file has more rows than a campaign takes (up to 10,000)Split the list into two files and run each one as its own campaign.
No column in the file holds phone numbersEach contact needs a phone number in a column of its own.
Rows in the file hold more than one contactPut each contact on a row of its own, with one phone number in the phone column.

Some files are named for what they are:

The fileWhat the builder says to do
An old-format Excel file (.xls)Open it in Excel and save as .xlsx or CSV, then upload that.
An Apple Numbers fileIn Numbers, use File → Export To → CSV (or Excel), then upload the export.
A PDFExport the list itself from your CRM as CSV or Excel.

If the file has phone numbers but none of its rows has a number we can call, the builder opens Review with a notice, and the table says why for each row. See Why some contacts are set aside.

Replace the list

  1. On Map, select Choose another file. Or go back to Upload in the step's three parts.

  2. Pick the new file.

What you see

Upload says which file is read and how many contacts are ready, and that a new file replaces it.

  • A new file replaces the list you uploaded before.

  • A new list asks for the permission box again, and its consent is confirmed again when you sign on Review.

Good to know

  • The file is read in your browser. Your contacts reach us only when you sign the campaign and submit it for review. See Who sees your list.

  • A file that will not upload is covered step by step in My list won't upload.
