The Call Guy

A contact got no follow-up text

Why a contact got the voicemail but not the follow-up text, what each state on SMS delivery means, and why the builder won't switch the text on.

After a voicemail is delivered, one follow-up text can go to that contact's mobile from your campaign line. Some contacts never get it, on purpose, and a few texts are refused by the carrier. The SMS delivery page says which, for every contact.

See what became of each text

  1. Open Delivery & recordings, then SMS delivery.

  2. Pick a campaign under Campaign, if you want one.

  3. Use The carrier's word to see each state, and Why not sent for the reasons.

What became of each follow-up textExample

What each state means

StateWhat it means
SendingThe text is waiting for its time, or on its way to the carrier.
Accepted by the carrierThe carrier took the text. We get no receipt from the handset, so we never call a text "delivered".
No receiptThe carrier never said either way.
Not acceptedThe carrier refused the text.
Not sentThe text was never handed to the carrier. Why not sent gives the reason.

Why a text is not sent

ReasonWhat it means
LandlineThe number is a landline or an internet phone line. Texts go to mobiles only. The voicemail still reached them.
Called back firstThey called your campaign line before the text was due. They have already been in touch.
Texted firstThey texted your line before the follow-up was due.
Had opted outThey had texted STOP, or your team opted them out.
OtherA rarer reason. Shown only when it applies. Ask the team about that text.

None of the first four is a fault, and nothing needs fixing. The follow-up text is included with the delivered voicemail's credit, so a text that is not sent costs nothing.

A text that is waiting

  • A text goes out 7 minutes after its voicemail is delivered.

  • Texts go out only between 9 AM and 9 PM, every day, on the campaign's time zone. A text due outside those hours shows Sending and goes out at 9 AM the next morning.

  • A voicemail that came back gets no text. See Delivered, returned and to go.

The builder won't switch the text on

On the builder's When step, the Send the follow-up text switch says why it can't be turned on:

The words under the switchThe fix
"A text is sent from a campaign line."Select Set yours up and choose a number first.
"Your campaign line is not active, so no text can be sent from it."Try again in a minute, or switch the text off.
"A text needs your sender details, the legal name and the mailing address."Select Add them in your line's settings, fill in your Sender details, then come back.

The text goes out only on a campaign you signed, where you confirmed the list's consent. See Rules for follow-up texts.
